Alessandra Carlotta Pellegrini is one of Italy’s foremost musicologists and twentieth-century music specialists. She has edited both Italian and French editions of Giacinto Scelsi’s autobiography Il sogno 101 , which she will present at Ultima Academy on Thursday 11 September, right before one of the festival´s main attractions, the Scelsi Revisited evening with Klangforum Wien. During Ultima Academy 2014, Cinemateket will show films and documentaries connected to our discussion topics. Art War (2011) by Marco Wilms tells the the story of young, creative Egyptians of the Arab Spring who, through the means of graffiti murals, rebellious music, art, and enlightenment, try to salvage their revolution from going under.
Percussionist Rainer Römer is part of Ensemble Modern. On Friday 12 September they will perform Exotica by Mauricio Kagel at the Ultima Festival. On Thursday 11 September he will take part on a presentation of the work at Ultima Academy, together with musicologist Jörn Peter Hiekel. In addition, Römer and pianist Ueli Wiget will lead a workshop on Exotica for music students.

The vocal ensemble Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart will premiere Simon Steen-Andersen´s new opera Buenos Aires at the Ultima Festival. On Friday 19 September they will take part on a presentation of the work at Ultima Academy, together with Argentine musicologist Esteban Buch, musicians from asamisimasa and the composer himself.

Asbjørn Schaathun was educated at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music in London. Further studies led him to IRCAM, the Institute for musical/acoustical research and coordination in Paris.

Norwegian pianist Ingfrid Breie Nyhus (f. 1978) performs folk music, contemporary music and classical music at the piano. She has received several prizes for her performances and recordings, such as The Norwegian Soloist Prize in 2005. The recording ‘Grieg Peasant Dances’ was nominated for the Norwegian Grammy Spellemannprisen and awarded “Record of the Year” by the Great Britain Grieg Society in 2007.
Nyhus has performed at festivals and venues such as the Risør Chamber Music Festival, the Bergen International Festival, the Ultima Festival, Sandvika Master Series, Bebersee Soireen Berlin, Schwetzinger Festspiele, Grønland Chamber Music Festival, King’s Place London, the Ilios Festival, Vestfoldfestspillene, Festspillene i Nord-Norge and more, and as a soloist with orchestras such as the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Trondheim and Kristiansand Symphony Orchestras.
Her folk music background stems from her father’s family and the pols from Røros, and she is also influenced by harding fiddle music from Hallingdal from her mother’s background. She has recorded pols music with her father and sister on the record 3xnyhus. Ingfrid Breie Nyhus now leads her own record company, LabLabel, where the first releases are to come in 2014 and 2015, with contemporary, classical, chamber and folk-inspired music.
Exploring this year’s festival theme, Nation, Ultima Academy has invited distinguished artists, critics and scholars to discuss concepts of power, ideology, and cultural identity and their connections with artistic practice and ethics. Among our guests are philosophers Antonio Negri and Alain Badiou.
The artist collective Laibach will perform at Ultima on September 13th. Here you can read the fundamental Laibach manifest, written collectively in 1982, first published as a whole in 1983 (Nova revija, no. 13/14), occasionally titled as The 10 Items of Convenant.
