Professor Erling. E. Guldbrandsen and Dr Peter Edwards from the University of Oslo will give an in-depth presentation on György Ligeti’s monumental opera, Le Grand Macabre (composed in 1974-77 and revised in 1996).

La Fura dels Baus

The presentation will include a discussion with director Valentina Carrasco and set designer Alfons Flores from La Fura dels Baus – their spectacular production of Le Grand Macabre will be premiered at the Norwegian Opera on 7 September. They will discuss the production and the potential challenges that a director faces in staging this – already a standard opera in the repertoire – in a radical new way.

New perspectives

Taking new research on Le Grand Macabre as a point of departure, Edwards and Guldbrandsen will explore the narrative, compositional process and form of the opera, and the aesthetics of modern and post-modern opera. Their new perspectives on the opera promise to contribute a new means with which to come to terms with the absurd and ambivalent theme behind one of the most successful operas of the twentieth century. With the participation of Frode Olsen (bass), Thor Inge Falch (tenor), Bjarne Sakshaug (pianist).

In collaboration with the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Opera & Ballett.
