With Trond Reinholdtsen, Amund Sveen and Christina Lindgren
With Mauricio Kagel "Staatstheater" as a historical reference, Ultima Academy organizes a workshop directed at composers, musicians, theater students and art students of all kinds. The methodological starting point is the concept of "Composed Theatre", an approach to musical thatre in which all aspects of theatrical production are considered musical material and treated as such, folowing musical principles, compositional techniques and notation.
The workshop will consist of an initial theoretical part with presentation and discussion of reference works and examples of simple scores, before participants are divided into groups. The workshop will result in a performance and a program book with the scores of the sketches developed during the work process.
Kagel's famous statement according to which one can compose with "aural and non-aural media, players, cups, tables, buses and oboes" will be taken literally and set the premises for the instrumentation.
The theme of the workshop is openly formulated in the title "State". A small compendium of texts including excerpts by Plato and from "The Communist Manifesto", an interview with Kagel, the Ministry of Education's policies for art colleges, Aiskylos' "Oresteia" and the ”Revelation of St.John”, will provide a common conceptual framework and is mandatory preparation.
A central aspect of the workshop is to combine inputs and methods from different artistic disciplines and to work at a basic level with a combination of audio, visual materials, body and semantic material. Participants will be asked to experiment with unconventional work distibution and creation processes. The idea is to use this limited amount of time to create a space for experimentation, chaos, visions and error.
